Here, we look at the exclusionary criteria. In principle, we can accept any waste that meets our acceptance conditions. Of course, one acceptance catalogue can never cover everything. Therefore, we examine each waste’s suitability for underground disposal on a case by case basis. To orient yourself, you can take a look at the list of EWC numbers we have certified. If your waste does not appear, inquire with us.
No, K+S does not dispose of radioactive waste.
The terms are based on different legal bases:
- SubstanceCycle Waste Management Act (Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz): The term hazardous waste refers to types of waste with specified hazardous properties that represent a potential hazard to health and / or the environment. The classification of waste according to its hazardous nature is a central element of waste management. The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) is central to the designation and classification of waste in the European Union. The EWC has been implemented in the form of the Waste Catalogue Ordinance (AVV) in Germany. A hazardous waste’s given classification determines its disposal procedure. - The Chemicals Act (ChemG) and Hazardous Substances Ordinance (GefStoffV): Hazardous substances are classified based on the physical and chemical dangers they present.
European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR): Dangerous goods are waste which require special handling during transport. As a producer, you generally classify your waste as dangerous goods. If you are unsure, we are available to advise you or, if necessary, refer you to an independent consultant.
Whether salt slag is classified as dangerous goods or not depends on the country of origin and the transport route. Here some different regulations apply. In Germany salt slag is usually not considered dangerous goods. When transported by sea, the material is often classified as dangerous goods, depending on the route. According to the definition per §3 of the ChemG, The Chemicals Act, a product is an object manufactured with a specific surface or shape that defines its function to a greater degree than its chemical composition. In the context of waste disposal, this refers to the waste which is used as a building material after conditioning. With the addition of conditioning liquid and complete curing, the waste is less dangerous as a product.
A mining backfill mixture is a special combination of different types of waste according to a predefined and approved formula, which has optimal structural properties.
To ensure an accurate analysis, you must provide a representative sample. We need a 1 kg sample for underground waste disposal and a 5 kg sample for underground recovery. A completed Consignment Note must accompany your sample, so that our laboratory personnel know which material they are dealing with. In addition, please ensure that your sample is properly packaged for the respective transport type. All the important information regarding packaging, shipping and labelling of your sample can be found on our Checklist. Please take note especially of the shipping address. In order for us to make a reliable conclusion, your sample must be truly representative. For underground disposal, the solids data is crucial, because after it is deposited underground, the waste does not come into contact with liquids. Yes, the analysis is primarily conducted in the K+S Centre for Research and Analysis. Specialists in waste analysis conduct the necessary analyses with state-of-the-art equipment. For special issues, for instance, dioxins/furans, dust explosion behaviour or organically contaminated pollutants, we work with other laboratories.
The analysis of waste is part of our Range of Services. It enables us, the experts, to make things easier for you. The K+S Centre for Research and Analysis examines waste samples and their suitability for underground disposal. Physical and chemical tests are conducted. The declaration analysis done here includes all the analyses to describe how the waste can be safely accepted by K+S. In addition to the standard analysis required by law, additional site-specific requirements are investigated.
The electronic waste record procedure (eANV) is not required for non-hazardous waste. However, the eANV has been required for hazardous waste since 2010. Contact us if you need assistance. We would be delighted to help you register with the electronic waste record procedure (eANV) via the Central Coordination Centre of the Federal States (ZKS).
All the relevant detailed information is summarised in the technical conditions, for example the chemical identification is displayed in a consistent format. This simplifies and standardises the process for the waste producer, the authorities as well as K+S, ensuring that everything runs smoothly for all parties involved.
This requires the approval of the authorities. In principle, three-year notifications for the underground recovery are conceivable. Three-year notifications can be issued at the Hattorf-Wintershall and Unterbreizbach locations. We are also working on making this possible at the other sites.

Depending on the authority, you may be charged a fee for notifications. The amount depends on several factors such as: the number of shipments, the quantity or the general scope of processing. If you are not sure about how this would affect you, please let us know.
The type of packaging is determined by the disposal method and location as well as the characteristics of the waste. The most important thing is that the waste does not damage packaging. Texture and contaminants also play an important role in the choice of packaging. In cases where the waste is classified as ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road), the packaging used must be certified and tested per hazardous goods regulations.
Different types of waste and disposal methods require to an extent different types of packaging. In general all packaging must be tightly sealed. Big bags must be antistatic to Type B (in accordance with DIN 61340-4-4) and uncritical for mining in salt mines (in accordance with a certificate issued by, e.g. the Institute of Hygiene). Waste destined for an underground waste disposal plant must have packaging that is flame retardant (in compliance with DIN 4102 and DIN EN 13501). An ADR approval (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) is required for the transport of hazardous goods. The cleanliness of the packaging is another important aspect, in particular concerning the safety of personnel involved in processing the waste. The labelling of your waste is essential for complete documentation. The K+S code must be placed on opposite sides and located on the open side of the underground waste disposal plant pallet so that it is visible as the pallet is loaded onto a forklift truck. Please note, however, that a stencil does not have to be used as long the K+S code is readable. In addition, the hazardous material labelling must be affixed so that it is clearly recognizable and will not fall off.
Underground waste disposal plant approval parameters require that special big bags have to be used in order to protect staff. A big bag for underground waste disposal must be antistatic to Type B (per DIN 61340-4-4) and flame retardant (per DIN 4102 and DIN EN 13501) in order to rule out the risk of fire. We would be pleased to make you an offer on suitable big bags, or you can also get them directly from the manufacturer. Repackaging is generally possible, but it requires special labelling. The K+S code, hazardous material markings and in some cases the word ‘repackaged’ must be used. Moreover, the internal big bag must be accessible. Please contact us if you have more specific questions.
Our cages for the transport of your waste underground have fixed dimensions, which require special pallets optimised for shaft transport. You can acquire the pallets directly from us or purchase them from a distributor or directly from the manufacturer. The packaging may not stick out over the edge of the pallet. Yes, we can arrange a system solution including transport service. We maintain a large network of reliable and expert forwarders. In the process, you benefit from the K+S Group’s favourable conditions. In principle, you can choose your own transport, provided it satisfies all the necessary requirements.
In order to transport hazardous materials, transport companies must meet specific requirements. A reliable and competent operation as well as safe equipment are basic prerequisites. The transport company must have a license for transport and the necessary permits and insurance (e.g. environmental liability). In addition, the company must possess the required ADR certificate. Furthermore, several countries also require additional authorisations. Details regarding your specific case can be provided upon request.

Contact your relevant transport company to inform them of your needs directly. Their dispatchers will then coordinate the arrival of the incoming goods with the K+S Entsorgung site.
All waste has its own unique characteristics and requires, depending on an assessment of the material contents, a very specific method of disposal. And since our locations vary in terms of possible technologies and processes, we will find the best location for disposal of your waste. Thus, technical suitability is the most important aspect. If your waste is suitable for multiple waste disposal plants, we will choose the most efficient solution, e.g. the shortest transport route.
The aim of underground disposal is to keep dangerous pollutants out of the biosphere. Inside long-term safe cavities, deposited waste is cut off from the outside environment. This is also true for underground recovery, where waste is also withdrawn from the environment. However, we don’t just remove the hazardous materials from the surface, we also use the waste as a building material which structurally stabilizes underground mining cavities.
An underground waste disposal plant is the right location for hazardous waste because it is safely sealed off from the ground, water and air, i.e. the biosphere, for the long term. Thanks to a combination of geologic and technical barriers, the highest possible level of safety is achieved. The safety of K+S’s underground waste disposal plants is determined by strong natural barriers, where the waste is embedded in multiple layers of salt, hundreds of metres thick. Overlapping beds of clay as well as a 500 metre layer of bunter sandstone guarantee that the waste is reliably sealed off from aquifers. Technical barriers such as packaging, masonry walls, insulation and finally the sealing of the shaft complete the multiple barrier system.
Several of the former mining fields below ground must be secured. For this purpose, we require backfill materials with suitable physical properties. Some types of waste have these properties, with others we achieve this through conditioning. This backfilling of selected decommissioned mining areas is legally required by the mining authorities.
K+S Entsorgung employs a variety of backfilling processes for underground recovery. The physico-chemical treatment prepares your waste for tipping backfill, slurry backfill or stacking. The REKAL process ensures that your salt slag is recycled and the constituent parts are recovered. For the greening of a potash tailings pile we employ another recovery process for construction and demolition waste and soil.
The condition of the waste as well as the level of contamination determine whether the waste is fit for underground disposal or underground recovery. If waste is suited for recovery, then the optimal process and the appropriate location are determined. If the waste alters in your process and no longer corresponds to the declaration and is thus no longer suited for any of our recovery solutions, we can reroute it to an underground disposal plant at short notice. Materials destined for underground recovery can also be deposited using underground disposal, which makes your deposit guaranteed.
Due to complete documentation during disposal, we know exactly where all waste is deposited in our underground disposal plants. In principle, the recovery of future recyclable materials is possible. To ensure the safety and economic feasibility of your project, an individual assessment is necessary. In cases like these, please contact us.
In the underground waste disposal plant our capacity is virtually unlimited. The remarkable thing is that through active daily mining new cavities are formed. On the other hand with underground recovery, subfields in mines are set according to instructions from the authorities. These are finite but will suffice for many decades. Thus, disposal is guaranteed. The REKAL and building material recycling divisions contribute to the recultivation of mid-size tailings piles in Lower Saxony, which as part of a long-term strategy can continue for several decades.
Our REKAL process is a complex process in which single constituent parts fulfil different purposes. During the core process of salt slag recycling all the slag components are recovered. The regained aluminium granulate goes to the smelting plants, the potassium chloride is processed in our potash plant into salt flux and from the aluminium oxide and granulating solution the result is a recultivation substrate for the greening of the potash tailings pile – a 100% recovery. At Sigmundshall, where there isn’t any other suitable material available, the greening of the potash tailings pile can be termed recovery because the salt erosion is reduced and with that an ecological contribution is made.
