Our underground waste disposal plants are the very best option for your highly contaminated waste such as:

  • Waste containing arsenic, cyanide or mercury
  • Incineration residues, galvanic residues, filtration and chemical distillation
  • Filter dust from the metal industry
  • Hardening salt residues
  • Contaminated soil and rubble
  • Residues of evaporated landfill leachate

These harmful substances are deposited into decommissioned sections of our potash mines. People and the environment are protected well into the future as waste is embedded in thick salt layers well below the groundwater level.


Large capacity

Since we are the only company in Europe to boast two separate underground waste disposal plants, you have maximum disposal security. This means that you will always have an alternative location with multiple delivery options. It also means that we are equipped to handle large projects. Herfa-Neurode and Zielitz have a total reception capacity of up to 330,000 tonnes of waste per year.

The journey your waste takes

Arrival at the disposal plant
Packaged in steel drums, big-bags or steel containers, your waste arrives at the underground waste disposal plant by truck or by train. In Herfa-Neurode, we also pack large quantities of pneumatically conveyable waste that is delivered in silo trucks into big-bags on site. In Zielitz, unloading of sea freight containers is also possible.

Acceptance control
Is the consignment note complete? Does the waste fit the declaration? Is the packaging correct? In accordance with our high safety standards, we take a reference sample and inspect all other details before depositing your waste underground.

Transport to the storage location
Now the containers with the waste are transported several hundred metres under the earth via the shaft. Underground vehicles pick them up and drive them to their destination, which is often several kilometres from the shaft. For safety reasons, substances are categorized and grouped together in specially designated areas.

The deposit
Next, the waste containers are carefully stacked into storage chambers. As soon as a chamber is filled, it is sealed up using walls or salt barriers.

Organisation and documentation
Our underground waste disposal plants are organized like warehouses. The location and time of storage, as well as the amount and condition of all waste is well documented, and a reserve sample is kept in the archive underground. Therefore, we always know exactly where the substances can be found.
