Underground disposal procedure
Track the wastes from delivery to disposal at the underground disposal plant:
 |
Delivery
- Delivery of the wastes to the underground waste disposal plant may be done either by truck or by rail.
- At the underground waste disposal facilities wastes may be deposited in barrels, big bags or steel containers.
- At the underground waste disposal plant Herfa-Neurode dustlike wastes can also be received in bulk, by silo truck, and can be packed in big bags on-site.
|
 |
Controlling
- At delivery, shipping documents and packaging are controlled.
- Before the wastes are acceptend, samples are taken and an analysis of the waste composition is conducted.
- Additionally, one waste sample is stored below-ground, at a sample chamber.
|
 |
Transport below ground
- After these controls and acceptance procedures wastes are transported via a hauling shaft, to several hundred metres below ground.
- The shafts used are no longer mined actively.
- All wastes, and the appendant responsibilities, are transferred to the property of K+S.
|
 |
Transport to the place of deposit
- Below-ground special vehicles transport the containers to their final destination. The distance to this destination is often several kilometres long.
- At the place of deposit the waste containers are carefully stacked into the caverns.
- For safety reasons, different waste substance groups are stored separated from each other.
|
 |
Underground Waste Disposal
- The various substance groups are separated by walls.
- Massive dams seal wastes off against the active mine.
- Time and place of the deposit are painstakingly recorded. It is therefore always known which waste may be found were, and how to get to it. The underground waste storage facility actually resembles a warehouse.
