The first step in choosing the safest possible method for the disposal of waste is a thorough analysis of the waste itself. The K+S Group’s accredited Centre for Research and Analysis is well versed in the standardised methods as well as in our own unique internal procedures. Working closely with our experts in waste chemistry, the laboratory takes care of everything including the analysis of solids, site-specific analyses and critical metrics concerning the health and safety of the team on the front lines of the waste processing.

We are here to advise you on your choices for packaging waste in big bags, barrels or steel boxes, if needed for transport, handling and storage. In contrast to underground waste disposal, which generally requires protective packaging, recoverable waste can also be disposed of in bulk form, that is without packaging.

By truck, sea freight container or train, every day or once a year, the K+S Group’s logistics experts move more than 56 million tonnes of material worldwide every year. Helping you find the solution that is best for your project is what we do. We have years of experience navigating through the domestic and international legal requirements for the transport of hazardous waste. When choosing logistics partners, we look to companies with the most qualified drivers and vehicles in top working order.
If you wish, we will provide you with offers from partners who will coordinate the transport of your waste from the production site to the disposal facility. You are then free to choose the offer that works best for you or to find another outside solution.
Disposal: The safest place to dispose of environmentally hazardous waste is in one of our underground waste disposal plants. There, the substances are separated from the biosphere by water- and air-tight layers of rock and salt several hundred meters thick.
Retrieval: Your waste can become a valued commodity overnight. We carefully document exactly where and in which underground facility we store which material. This makes it possible to recover waste for recycling if and when commodity prices make it economically viable.
Recovery: For other mineral materials, the best option is underground recovery. We take advantage of the physical characteristics of less contaminated waste to secure mines. This recoverable waste has to withstand considerable rock pressure through long periods of time and some substances have to be treated according to their composition. In order to utilize as many different types of waste as possible, we are constantly developing new processes and formulas.
Recycling: From the salt slag produced in the secondary aluminium industry, we obtain aluminium granulate, salt fluxes and substrates for greening of tailings piles. We also use building materials to recultivate a potash tailings pile in Lower Saxony.
